Exist in photos - for your kids
For as long as I can remember, my mom had this one hobby while we were kids- Creative Memories.
I’m positive that a lot of you know exactly what I’m talking about already, but for those who have never heard of Creative Memories, it was scrapbooking. Essentially, mom would:
1) Take pictures of everything from Christmas morning, to birthdays, to trips to the zoo.
2) Order little 4x6 prints of her disposable camera rolls (two prints of every shot)
3) Cut shapes and patterns out of the photos and colored paper, to then glue into an album.
It was great, and she obviously loved going on scrapbooking weekends with her sisters and putting our family books together. The last time that I was home, I took a few hours (yes, hours) to look through them all. And you know what I realized? My favorite pictures, the ones I absolutely cherish, are the photos of my parents.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s the two of them, or all of us together. Something about seeing my parents, as they’re being parents to us kids, is incredible. I have this one picture of my mom while she’s pregnant with me, and I think, “God, I’m that age now. And I’m pretty sure I have that same outfit.” It's incredible, and I'm so thankful for whoever took that picture!
That being said, we really don’t have very many photos that include my mom or dad. There's obviously no way to go back in time to make photos of them, but I do try to photograph them these days, whenever I can!
So moms, dads, hear me out on this one. EXIST IN YOUR PHOTOS. You might feel silly, or uncomfortable, or self conscious, but excuse me for saying - this one's not about you. You do so much for your kids. Give them the gift of these memories that they will be able to hold onto, forever.
Be in your photos.
